News

Welcome to the UnTangled News page!

Why a News page? Because I remain committed to my original promise to blog subscribers: only blog posts in your email inbox. It’s often tempting as a blog grows to start inserting blog announcements and promotions into your email. I don’t want that to happen at UnTangled. So, occasionally, when I have news to share with you, I will provide a link at the end of the post that will bring you here. I hope this keeps you up to date with events happening around the blog!

Interview with “Shine” host Sonja Shin

TODAY Show Video

“And who’s that author you mentioned?”

In the interview, Willie Geist asked me where I got the inspiration for the “Flawless Finish” part of the letter to my daughter. I cited an author and many of you have asked for clarification about his identity. His name is Henri Nouwen. The idea of our death being a gift to those we leave behind is one theme throughout his writings, and it is probably most explicitly articulated in his book, “Turn My Mourning Into Dancing.” I hope that helps!

TODAY Show Update

If you can be on the TODAY Show once, why not be on it twice? My daughter and I will be interviewed on the Show on Thursday, February 27th, during the 9am EST hour of the show. And then we’ll be on again on Friday! We will be walking in the week-end “Body Image Heroes” fashion show, during the 8am EST hour of the show. Dad’s looking forward to the interview and daughter’s looking forward to the fashion show. Go figure!

Next Google Hangout

Due to the events surrounding the TODAY Show appearance, the next Video Hangout will be delayed until the following week. It will happen on March 16th at 2pm CST, and we will once again be utilizing the user-friendly AnyMeeting web conferencing solution. I look forward to talking to you more then!

Upcoming TODAY Show Appearance

I’m excited to announce that my daughter and I have been invited to appear on the TODAY Show on Thursday, February 27th, as part of a week-long series dedicated to body image and acceptance. We’re thinking of this as a great adventure, we’re excited about this opportunity to talk about where our beauty really lies, and we are aware we have no idea what we’re doing!

Increased Blog Traffic and Correspondence

As many of you know, the letter I recently wrote to my daughter has brought a lot of attention and new traffic to the blog. It’s been an exciting time and I’ve been encouraged in so many ways by the response to the letter. For instance, I love hearing stories of other dads out there who have communicated these same messages to their daughters in one way or another.

At the same time, the increased traffic has come with a dramatic increase in comments and emails. Since starting the blog, I’ve valued the opportunity to respond to almost every correspondence. However, over the last week, it’s been physically impossible to do so. While I will continue to make it a priority to set aside time for responding to as much correspondence as possible, I may not be able to reply to every comment or email. Please know: I read and cherish each and every one, and when I can’t respond, it feels like a little loss. Your words and stories are worthy of attention, and my limitations don’t diminish their value one bit.

One last thing: one of the great joys of this week has been watching readers respond to each other in the comments with support and with grace. That has been my hope all along in building this community, and I encourage you to continue do so!

Back at ya, Kelly: “Your words and stories are worthy of attention, and my limitations don’t diminish their value one bit.” I enjoy reading your posts and they almost always give me pause for thought and appreciation.

I was one of the readers who started reading your blog very recently. I really enjoyed the text message Valentine one because my husband is so wonderful. Even though we both try to do little things for each other he surpasses me by far! As soon as I read the blog I picked up my phone and texted him a few words that I always feel in my heart but haven’t taken the time to say lately. He was so in awe. He called me immediately and I just laughed because I knew how much it meant to him. Thank you so much for that moment. And thank you for the reminder that it really is the little things.
